This tale of friendship and survival set in the 1860s focuses on a roguish group of runaways living by their wits and instincts. Two of them are complimentary opposites: Drew (Barry Brown), a good boy from God-fearing stock, out west to evade the draft. Jake (Jeff Bridges), a scruffy scoundrel. They encounter rebels and miscreants and their journey makes them older and wiser beyond their years. Written by Robert Benton and David Newman (BONNIE AND CLYDE) and directed by Benton (KRAMER VS.
