In 1974, the year the film “Il cittadino si ribella” was released in theaters, the 'poliziottesco' genre was still experiencing its heyday, and the work directed by Enzo Castellari is among the most successful of the aforementioned genre. As in his previous film “La polizia incrimina, la legge assolva”, “Il cittadino…” is set in Genoa and stars Franco Nero, this time not in the role of an 'iron commissioner' but in that of a simple individual who, finding no help among the police, decides to take justice into his own hands. Even the authors of the soundtrack remain the same: Guido and Maurizio De Angelis, expert authors of film music of various genres, have the task here of translating into music a predominantly crude and brutal film, dominated by a violence that leaves no room for feelings such as pity or compassion; the same violence that, on the one hand, dragged critics towards resounding condemnations, but on the other, pushed spectators to fill the cinemas.
The compositions of “Il cittadino si ribella” are built on three main themes: the title track, outlined by the bass melody and harmonica solos, the driving one of “Goodbye my friend”, present in nine different versions, and the relaxed one of “Drivin' all around”. Tension and groove alternate naturally with more reflective and delicate moments.
Despite the modest success of “Il cittadino…” and the excellent work done by the De Angelis brothers, only one 45 rpm single was released of the original soundtrack in 1974, containing the 'vocal versions' of “Goodbye my friend” and “Drivin' all around”; only in 2007 was all the unreleased material made available, the same material that can be found in this release by AMS Records, which for the first time does justice to the beautiful music composed over 40 years ago and now finally released on vinyl. A new artwork, long liner notes, a gatefold cover and a collection of reproductions of flyers and lobby cards from the time complete the picture of an unmissable reissue for lovers of soundtracks and Italian genre cinema!
