In a brightly lit art gallery in Rome, the American Sam Dalmas observes an eerie scene: a person in a black raincoat and dressed in black gloves, a flashing knife, a helpless, bloodied woman. Sam can't help because a large pane of glass prevents him from doing so. However, the American is able to scare away the man in the coat. The young woman survives. Apparently, the perpetrator was a wanted serial killer. Because Sam seems to be suspected by the police himself, he tries to investigate the matter. In the process, he himself is in mortal danger ...

Dario Argento's directorial debut was praised by critics, and even Alfred Hitchcock paid tribute to the young Italian. The film with Tony Musante, Eva Renzi, Werner Peters and Mario Adorf is an early masterpiece by Argento and a flawless giallo - a foretaste of later highlights in the director's work. The elegant, eerie thriller is refined by a wonderful soundtrack by Oscar® winner Ennio Morricone. In Germany, the film was marketed as a Bryan Edgar Wallace crime thriller, but in fact it borrows heavily from the novel The Screaming Mimi by Frederic Brown.
